Crash Data Removal from Chinese Cars and Tesla - Is It Possible?

Can you remove crash data from an SRS module in a Chinese car or Tesla? We explain the challenges, costs, and RH850 chips used in exotic vehicles.

Just a few years ago, seeing a BYD, MG, or Tesla on a Polish road was unusual. Today, Chinese cars and the American giant from California are an increasingly common sight across Europe. And since they drive - they crash. Which raises the question: is crash data removal from an SRS module in one of these "exotic" cars even possible? The short answer is yes, we do it every day. The longer answer is more interesting.

Chinese Brands in Europe - Who's Who

The market has changed dramatically. Chinese manufacturers no longer sell cheap copies of European models - they offer modern, well-equipped vehicles, often with electric drivetrains. On European roads you'll now find brands like:

BYD - one of the world's largest EV manufacturers, aggressively entering the European market with models like the Atto 3, Seal, and Dolphin.

MG - a brand with British roots, now owned by Chinese conglomerate SAIC. Models like the MG4, MG ZS EV, and MG5 sell very well in Europe.

Geely - a Chinese giant that owns Volvo Cars and the Lynk & Co brand. They also produce vehicles under their own Geely name.

NIO - a premium Chinese EV brand known for its battery swap system.

Chery - one of the longest-standing Chinese exporters, present in many markets with their Omoda and Jaecoo models.

BAIC - Beijing Automotive, producing both passenger and commercial vehicles.

Wuling - a joint venture with GM, known for ultra-affordable EVs like the Mini EV, but also making larger models.

Xpeng - a Chinese Tesla competitor with advanced autonomous driving systems.

On top of these, there are smaller brands like Dongfeng, Great Wall (Haval, Ora), and Aiways. The Chinese car market in Europe grows every year, and with it grows the demand for servicing and repairing their electronic components - including SRS modules.

What About Tesla?

Tesla is a different story. Although it's an American brand, it's been present in Europe for years and its popularity continues to grow. The Model 3 and Model Y are among the best-selling electric vehicles on the continent.

From an SRS module repair perspective, Tesla has its own specifics. It's a brand that has always designed its electronics in a highly integrated way - many functions that traditional cars handle with separate control units, Tesla combines into fewer centralised computers. The SRS module in a Tesla is a modern controller with on-chip memory, which means its repair requires advanced techniques.

Are the SRS Module Manufacturers the Same?

This is one of the most common questions, and the answer is: partly yes, partly no.

In the traditional automotive industry, SRS modules are made by a handful of large Tier 1 suppliers such as Bosch, Continental, Autoliv (Veoneer), ZF TRW, and Denso. These are the same companies that produce airbag controllers for Volkswagen, Toyota, BMW, and hundreds of other brands. A single Bosch module might end up in dozens of different car models from different manufacturers.

Some Chinese brands use these same suppliers. Geely, as the owner of Volvo, uses components from European suppliers in many of its models - including SRS modules built on well-known platforms. Similarly, SAIC (owner of MG) often uses controllers from established suppliers in models destined for the European market, in order to meet European type approval standards.

But not all Chinese brands go this route. Some manufacturers, especially those with a large domestic market, use their own suppliers or smaller Chinese firms to produce SRS modules. This means controllers built on the same chips (because Renesas and NXP sell processors to everyone), but with different software architecture, different memory layouts, and sometimes unique security measures.

In practice? An SRS module from a Chinese car might use exactly the same RH850 processor as a controller from a Toyota - but the software is different, the memory layout is different, and the repair method requires separate development.

RH850 Chips in Chinese Cars - Why It's a Challenge

This is where it gets interesting. Many new-generation Chinese cars use processors from the Renesas RH850 family in their SRS modules, specifically the R7F701 series. These are the same chips we described in detail in our article on why modern SRS module repair is expensive.

A quick recap: RH850 R7F701 processors have flash memory built directly into the chip, and the module manufacturer permanently disables serial programming mode. Crash data is locked inside an electronic vault that only the manufacturer holds the keys to. To access it, you need fault injection techniques - precise voltage glitches that force the processor to reveal its memory contents.

With Chinese brands, there's an additional factor - limited documentation. For SRS modules from Toyota or Volkswagen, there's a vast knowledge base built up over years by thousands of workshops worldwide. For Chinese brands, this base is much smaller. Fewer specialists have worked with these controllers, fewer reference memory dumps are available, and technical documentation from Chinese module producers can be harder to obtain than from European suppliers.

What does this mean in practice? Every new Chinese car model that arrives at our workshop for the first time requires additional research. We need to obtain reference dumps, identify the memory structure, and determine the glitch parameters for the specific processor variant. This is time and effort that factors into the repair cost.

But - and this is important - it doesn't mean the repair is impossible. It means it requires more specialist knowledge and experience. And that is exactly what we do.

How Much Does Crash Data Removal from Exotic Cars Cost?

The price of crash data removal depends primarily on what chip sits inside the SRS module - not on what logo is on the car's bonnet. A module with an RH850 R7F701 processor will cost more to repair regardless of whether it comes from a Toyota, Tesla, or Geely. As a rough guide:

  • Modules with classic EEPROM (older generations, some simpler models) - the cheapest category, quick repair
  • Modules with RH850 processors and on-chip memory (newer Chinese cars, Tesla, newer Japanese and European models) - more expensive category, requiring advanced techniques

Compare that to the alternative: a new SRS module for a Chinese car, imported from China, with a waiting time of several weeks and a price that might surprise you. Or trying to buy a used controller - for less popular brands, finding a part from a breaker's yard is nearly impossible. Is It Worth Repairing an SRS Module from an Exotic Car?

Absolutely. For Chinese brands and Tesla, removing crash data from the original module makes even more sense than it does for popular European cars.

Why? Because the availability of new and used SRS modules for these vehicles in Europe is limited. Authorised service centres for Chinese brands in Poland are still building their networks. Spare parts often have to be shipped directly from China, which extends the repair timeline by weeks. And used modules on the secondary market practically don't exist - there simply aren't enough of these cars in scrapyards yet.
