Crash data removal vs used SRS module – which is better?

After a collision or shunt where the airbags deployed, the airbag warning light stays on on the dashboard. That means the SRS control module has stored accident data, known as crash data. Why a used SRS module does not always work straight away

An SRS control module is not a simple “black box” that you just plug in and forget. It is a computer programmed for a specific car. When you buy a used module from another vehicle, you are installing software prepared for a completely different car into your own.

Even if the part number of the used module matches yours, that does not guarantee it is ready to work. Many control modules lock themselves after a collision and require not only crash data deletion but also virginization – returning the module to a “virgin” state with no previous VIN or vehicle configuration. You should also remember that a used module has an unknown history. It may come from a crashed car, from a flood-damaged vehicle, or have been repaired several times before. VIN mismatch and coding – the most common traps

One of the most common problems after fitting a used SRS module is a VIN mismatch – the VIN stored in the control module does not match your vehicle’s chassis number. The safety computer talks to other units (instrument cluster, immobiliser, impact sensors) and expects full data compatibility. Virginization solves part of the problem because it removes old data, but it is often not enough. After returning the module to factory state it still has to be properly coded: your car’s VIN must be written in, the equipment variant matched, and in newer models so-called SCN coding or online programming carried out. That needs specialist diagnostic equipment, sometimes access to the manufacturer’s servers and real experience. At a workshop this service can be costly, and in some cases the dealer refuses to code a used module and instead offers a new control unit.

Consequences of fitting a used module without preparation

If you fit a used SRS module without cleaning, virginization and proper coding, you can run into several serious problems. Some are comfort issues, others affect safety and the legality of using the car.

  • a constantly lit airbag warning light on the dashboard,
  • no communication between the module and impact sensors, which can mean the airbags will not deploy in an accident,

When does a new SRS module win, and when does crash data removal?

In the newest cars, especially those with advanced safety systems, a brand-new SRS module can be the safest choice. This route is also the most expensive – original modules for popular cars range from several hundred to even a few thousand Polish zloty.

In older vehicles, and when your control module has no mechanical or electronic damage, crash data removal is the best compromise. Instead of buying a used module that may need extra work, you send your own module to the service. After the memory is cleaned it is ready to be refitted – usually with no extra coding needed.
