How to Find Your SRS Module Part Number - Complete Guide
Learn where the SRS airbag module is located in your car, how to identify the correct part number from the label, and what numbers to enter in our search tool.

After a collision, your car's airbag warning light may stay on even after visible damage has been repaired. The cause is often crash data stored in the SRS module - the electronic control unit responsible for the airbag system. To get it repaired, you need one critical piece of information: the part number.
This guide will show you exactly where the SRS module is located in your car, how to find the part number on it, and what to enter into our search tool to get an instant quote.
Where Is the SRS Module Located in the Car?
The SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) module is a small electronic box that manages all airbag and seatbelt pretensioner signals. Its location varies by manufacturer, but there are several common spots:
Most Common Locations
-
Under the center console - This is the most frequent location. The module sits between the front seats, usually beneath the handbrake or gear shift area. You'll typically need to remove plastic trim panels to access it.
-
Under the driver's or passenger's seat - Many European cars (BMW, Mercedes, some VW group vehicles) mount the module directly under one of the front seats. Look for a metal box bolted to the floor with a wiring harness connected to it.
-
Behind the dashboard / kick panel - Some vehicles place the module behind the lower dashboard on the driver's side, near the steering column or behind the kick panel near the pedals.
-
In the center tunnel - In some cars (especially older models), the module is located inside the center tunnel running between the seats.
Tips for Finding It
- The module is always in the center of the vehicle (along the longitudinal axis) - this allows it to accurately detect impacts from all directions.
- It's a small metal or plastic box, roughly the size of a smartphone or slightly larger.
- It will have a multi-pin wiring connector attached to it.
- If you're unsure, search online for "[your car model] SRS module location" - there are many model-specific guides and videos available.
What Does the Part Number Look Like?
Once you've located and removed the SRS module, you need to find the part number on it. Here's what to look for:
On a VW Group Module (VW, Audi, Skoda, SEAT)

On VW group modules, the part number is printed on a white label on the module housing. Look for a number in this format:
- 5Q0 959 655 BH
- 8V0 959 655 B
- 3Q0 959 655 AN
The number typically starts with a 3-character code (vehicle platform), followed by 959 (airbag electronics group), then 655 (part type), and ends with one or more letters indicating the revision.
On a Volvo Module

Volvo modules usually display the part number on a sticker. Look for numbers like:
- P31406633
- 31334280
Volvo part numbers are often a simple string of digits, sometimes prefixed with "P".
General Rules for All Brands
The part number can be found:
- On a sticker/label - The most common location. Look for a white or silver label on the housing.
- Engraved/embossed on the housing - Some modules have the number stamped directly into the plastic or metal casing.
- Near the main connector - Sometimes printed close to where the wiring plugs in.
- On multiple stickers - Many modules have several labels. The part number may appear on more than one.
How to Read and Interpret the Number
Example: VW Group
Number: 5Q0 959 655 BH
| Part | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 5Q0 | Vehicle platform code (MQB platform) |
| 959 | Parts group (safety/airbag electronics) |
| 655 | Component identifier |
| BH | Version/revision letter(s) |
Important: The revision letters at the end (like "BH") are critical. Different revisions may have different software and require different repair procedures. Always include them.
Example: Volvo
Number: P31406633
Volvo uses a simpler numbering system. The entire string is the part number - include it all.
Example: Other Brands
- Toyota/Lexus: 89170-XXXXX
- Ford: AB39-14B321-XX
- BMW: 65.77-XXXXXXX
- Mercedes: A000 905 XX XX
Each manufacturer has its own format, but the principle is the same - copy the complete number including all letters and digits.
What Number Should You Enter in Our Search?
When using our module search tool below, here's what to enter:
If You Know the Exact Part Number
Enter the full part number including all letters and revision codes. You can enter it with or without spaces - our system handles both formats:

If You're Not Sure Which Number Is the Part Number
Many modules have multiple numbers on the label (hardware number, software number, serial number, etc.). If you're unsure which one is the correct part number, enter all of them - try each number in the search. Our database will match the correct one.
Common numbers you might see on the label:
- Part number (what we need) - identifies the hardware
- Hardware number - sometimes same as part number
- Software number - firmware version, usually not needed but you can try it
- Serial number - unique to your unit, won't match in our system
