SRS module installation after repair is the moment where many people make mistakes that result in crash data being written again or the airbag warning light coming back on. Why Installation Matters So Much
The SRS module isn't just an ordinary computer - it's a device that begins running diagnostics the instant it's connected to the car's electrical system. It checks crash sensors, airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, and every component in the passive safety system. If anything is wrong, the controller will flag it.
The problem is that certain faults (such as a damaged crash sensor or a disconnected airbag) can be interpreted by the module as the result of a collision. In the worst case, the controller may write crash data again - putting you right back where you started.
What to Check BEFORE Installing the Module
Before connecting the repaired SRS module, make sure the entire safety system in the car is in working order. This is a critical step that must not be skipped.
Airbags - if any airbag deployed in the collision, it must be replaced with a new one before mounting the module. Once connected, the controller will detect a missing or faulty airbag and log an error. This applies to driver, passenger, side, and curtain airbags - every one that fired.

Repaired Module (Your Original)

Used Module (From Another Car)
If you're buying a used SRS module from a different vehicle, things get more complicated. That module has the previous car's VIN stored in memory. In many newer cars, a VIN mismatch causes errors, and in some cases the module won't communicate with your vehicle at all.
There are two solutions:
- Virginization - restoring the module to factory state, including erasing the VIN from memory. After installation in the new car, the module will automatically pick up the VIN from the vehicle's CAN network (if the model supports this).
- VIN rewriting - manually changing the VIN in the module's memory to your car's VIN. This requires specialist equipment and software.
New Module (From Dealer or Aftermarket)
New modules are usually already virginized - they don't have an assigned VIN. Upon first connection to the car, they pick up the VIN automatically. However, not all car models and not all modules work this way. When buying a new module, always confirm it's compatible with your car and that it doesn't require additional configuration at the dealer.
How to Properly Install the SRS Module
Once all system components are confirmed working, you can proceed with installation. A few important rules:
Disconnect the battery and wait - before any work on the SRS system, disconnect the battery terminals and wait at least 10-15 minutes. The SRS system has a backup capacitor that maintains voltage for several minutes after power is cut. This is a safety feature in case power is lost during a collision.
Inspect the connectors - before plugging in the module, visually check the connector. Pins should be straight, clean, and dry. SRS module connectors typically have special locks and safety catches - don't force them.
Mount in the correct position - the SRS module must be installed exactly in its factory location, properly oriented, and securely bolted down. Loose mounting can cause false readings from the module's internal accelerometer.
Reconnect battery and check - after installation, reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on (without starting the engine), and watch the airbag light. It should illuminate for a few seconds during the self-test, then turn off. If the light stays on or flashes, the system has detected a problem.
